The Beat

What I love about the beat is it starts out slow, simmering in the dry desert noon, savouring every psychedelicious half-known colloquialism but then it gets into a flow, like driving a beaten up old muscle car a Cutlass or a 'Stang from '57 shaking off the rust on an Arizona road digging the dusk and thinking you're cruising, lost in nirvana, but little by little picking up speed, whisky, peyote, weed, anything to see the half-lit mesas as once and future bodhisattvas- the engine roars, gliding over the smooth asphalt and you're flying through a red and oh shit is that the fuzz up ahead? So you slow down, take it easy (but take it!), serious poet frown, remember to love the words, the beat, the meaning, the metre, and pretty soon it's got you careening (again) through the cool desert night.

The apple core glared back at them, bruised and ill-tempered, as they sorted the forgotten memories in Airport Lounge. The bell tower was combed up and down, but it was the river that hid the memories’ rememberers and carried them away. The giant came up from the underworld, and the sweat dripped off his face as he stacked hundreds of aluminium standards. Then he clomped around the floor in steel toed work boots, shovelling sandwiches from bin to chute- and now a holler to cease his labour. Now barefoot, the giant bundled up willow stems, the sweat just pouring from his face as he belted out hot, sad, iron-and-steel blues. The day drove on, under the deep blue sky, and then he spent his days just wandering the downs. But tonight the giant sat down to rest his weary feet upon a grassy knoll. Next ‘morn in his place could be found a standing stone.

Rain, almost mist, hovered over the small bungalow. There was a tiny walk through a tiny yard, leading to a rather large and sombre door. She checked the scrap of paper once more, holding it up to the number over the mailbox. 126 Overholt Avenue. This was indeed the address. This is me learning to walk and talk, and going to school for the first time; weaning from my mother’s milk to eating sidewalk chalk and learning about life without Momma watching over. Hey, welcome to my page. I'm a musician and a writer. I mostly play the sax, clarinet, and piano. I am primarily a jazzer, and that music has had a huge effect on my writing (which is what I am currently using DeviantArt for).

Mingus on Mingus

The grandson of the great Charles Mingus (a jazz bassist, and one of the best artists of all time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWmE8T09-G4 , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePMvgRGm73U , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE9hQdeJyxE&feature=related) is making a documentary on his grandfather. He needs some donations, anything helps.
